Interior Designer in Kensington & Chelsea

Juliette Byrne is an award-winning luxury interior designer in Kensington and Chelsea, based in the Chelsea Design Quarter on the King's Road. Founded in 1988, the studio has restored and furnished Grade II listed townhouses, Georgian and Victorian terraces, mansion flats and new-build houses across the borough.

Juliette leads every project personally with a team of six designers, working alongside architects and contractors from the first drawings through to a turnkey installation. The first consultation is complimentary and there is no minimum project size. Recent work in the borough includes a Grade II listed Kensington townhouse restored over 15 months, from the architectural work through to the final furnishing.

Period, Listed and New-Build Homes in Kensington & Chelsea

Kensington's stucco-fronted Victorian terraces, mansion blocks and garden squares sit alongside some of London's finest Georgian houses. In Chelsea, quiet streets of period townhouses run from the King's Road down to the river.

Much of the borough is listed or in a conservation area. The studio plans every change around those constraints from the start, restoring cornicing, fireplaces and staircases while adding the space, light and technology a modern family needs. It also designs the interiors of new-build houses in the borough, such as the five-storey townhouse in Chelsea built on the site of a former builders' yard.

The studio also works across neighbouring Belgravia and Mayfair.

"Every project's journey begins from understanding our clients, balancing their wants, needs and ultimate vision with the context and history of the property."

Interior Design in Kensington: Listed Townhouses and Family Homes

In Kensington, the studio renovated a Grade II listed townhouse over 15 months with architects Newman Zieglmeier. The original stone staircase and cornicing were restored, and Jamb chimney pieces and a traditional-style conservatory were added.

Nearby, a Kensington family home was extended with architects Jones Lambell to give the family light-filled living space, a new kitchen and a master suite, with the top floor given over to the children's bedrooms and bathrooms, each individually styled.

Interior Design in Chelsea: Townhouses, Apartments and New Builds

In Chelsea, an award-winning five-storey new-build townhouse was created on the site of a former builders' yard, and a listed Georgian terrace was extended with a basement and loft.

Other Chelsea projects include a new-build family house designed around an art collection, a period townhouse reimagined behind its original façade, a townhouse converted into three apartments, a Victorian duplex and a pied-à-terre near Sloane Square. How We Work on Kensington & Chelsea Projects

Every project starts with a complimentary consultation at the property. Juliette takes the brief and talks through your requirements, lifestyle and vision for the home, along with budget and timescale.

The studio then works in three phases. The first is the full design, from concept and layouts through plans, elevations, lighting, kitchens, bathrooms, joinery and soft furnishings, all costed and signed off before any work begins. The second is consultancy on site, making sure the contractor builds the design as drawn. The third is procurement and installation, so the finished home is ready to move into.

Juliette is lead designer on every project, with one of the studio's designers running the day to day. The studio is happy to join your existing architect and contractor, or to recommend a team suited to the job, and you decide how involved you want to be. Interior Design Costs and Timescales in Kensington & Chelsea

There is no minimum project size. A single room or an apartment refresh is welcome, and a small enquiry often grows once the conversation starts.

The cost of a project depends on the size of the property, the specification of the finishes and furniture, and whether structural work, planning or listed building consent is involved. Costs are discussed at the first consultation, after which the studio prepares a tailored fee proposal. Every item is then costed and documented with complete transparency once you have reviewed the furniture and finishes, so there are no surprises later.

Every project is different, so the programme is agreed at the outset rather than assumed. As an example, the Grade II listed townhouse in Kensington was restored over 15 months, including the architectural work, while a furnishing-only scheme takes considerably less. Every design, finish and cost is signed off before building work begins, which keeps the later stages on programme.

"We are able to provide a turnkey finish, down to selecting your napkin rings, objets, towels and bedding, ready for you to put your clothes away and start enjoying your home."

Aftercare, Awards and Why Clients Choose Juliette Byrne

Each home is designed individually, so the result belongs to the client rather than to a signature look, and projects are delivered on budget and on time through long-standing relationships with trusted joiners and craftsmen.

The relationship continues after handover. Clients come back years later for a refresh, the studio helps with artwork and accessories once they have moved in, and each client receives a bound book recording the project from start to finish.

Juliette Byrne is a BIID Registered Interior Designer. The studio's recent work has won the design et al Elite Residential Property Award 2025 and the International Design & Architecture Award 2024, and Juliette has been listed among the UK's best interior designers by Country & Town House and in House & Garden's Top 100. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an interior designer cost in Kensington and Chelsea?

It depends on the size of the property, the specification and whether structural work is involved. Costs are discussed at the first consultation, which is complimentary, and the studio then prepares a tailored fee proposal. Every item is costed and documented with complete transparency before work begins, and fees are only discussed once you wish to proceed.

How long does an interior design project take?

Every project is different, so the studio agrees a programme at the outset rather than quoting a standard figure. As an example, the Grade II listed townhouse in Kensington was restored over 15 months. Every design, finish and cost is signed off before building work begins, which keeps the later stages on programme.

Is Juliette personally involved in every project?

Yes. Juliette takes the brief, is lead designer on every project and attends the client meetings, while one of the studio's designers runs the day-to-day work. You can always speak to her directly.

Can you start straight away?

Usually. With a team of six designers the studio can begin the brief and concept quickly, though it depends on workload at the time, so early contact helps.

Do you work with our own architect and contractor?

Yes. The studio often joins an existing team, and can equally recommend architects and contractors suited to the size of the project.

Do you work on listed buildings and in conservation areas?

Yes. Much of the studio's central London work is in Grade II listed houses and conservation areas, including the Kensington townhouse and the Georgian terrace in Chelsea above. Every proposal is planned around the listing from the outset.

Is there a minimum project size?

No. A single room, a furnishing-only scheme or a pied-à-terre is welcome, and many of the studio's larger projects began as a conversation about one room.

Do you work with developers as well as private clients?

Yes. Alongside private homes, the studio designs turnkey schemes for developers, including a Chelsea townhouse converted into three apartments and a Victorian duplex prepared for market. Developer projects are designed to the same standard as private ones, with every scheme costed and signed off before work begins.

Can you manage a project if we live abroad?

Yes. Many of the studio's clients are overseas, and the team is used to taking more responsibility on their behalf, with regular site meetings, video calls and the final installation handled by the studio so the home is ready on arrival.
