Pied à Terre, Sloane Square

Location: Sloane Square

TimeLine: 10 months

Scope of Works: full interior design & bespoke joinery service

The apartment was bought by our clients as a London Pied à Terre and had been rented previously. The design brief was to reimagine the space and transform it into a luxurious central London base for their family to enjoy. The existing layout was retained but we wanted to ensure that the main living area was more defined and we therefore created 3 zones – the kitchen and bar area, main seating around the newly created joinery unit and a fully fitted comfortable banquette dining area.

The bedrooms were given a full make over with new wallpaper, carpets and fully fitted joinery – each with its unique colour palette and feel – we created a panelled hallway with the addition of antique mirrors and decorative wall lights and added in new cornicing throughout to give the whole apartment a classic contemporary twist.

Dining Area

The custom banquette dining area was designed to seat 6 guests for dining as well as being a place for the client to relax and even work from home at times. The joinery was built to have integrated LED lighting behind the seat cushion -discreetly hidden to wash light on the feature wallpaper from Fromental, hand painted cherry blossom design printed on natural silk. The seating was covered in a practical but stylish cream faux leather this is complemented by the marble topped dining table with a contrast brass metal base. The addition of three Robert Langford chairs completes the area, along with the feature of the dining area; a large antique brass finish pendant light from Porta Romana finish with crystal detailing.

The apartment has a series of windows which span the living room, we therefore added an automatic electrical system to operate the new roman and privacy blinds made in a dove cream satin with a distinctive braided boarder detailing.

As our client requested a turn key finish we completed the dining area design by sourcing gold table mats, gilt cutlery with linen mauve napkins and David Mellor polished natural wood napkin rings.

Living Room

For the opposite side of the room the clients wanted to have a floor to ceiling built-in joinery unit which incorporated a large flat screen TV, open shelving with antique mirror and LED lighting. The clients have a collection of Netsuke; Japanese carved figurines. We designed a glass fronted cabinet which enables the client to display their Netsuke figures and complimentary reference book collection. Framing the built-in joinery on either side are two Porta Romana wall lights with a rose colour satin shades and an aged gilt finish.

The Robert Langford sofa is covered in a soft chenille from Holly Hunt, stylish and practical with a stain repellent finish. We added in a variety of soft toned light pink and mauve scatter cushions which complement the banquette seat. The large bespoke area rug is supplied from Riviere, featuring a mixture of silk and wool in its raised pattern which compliments the circular mauve upholstered ottoman with its distinctive circular wooden band around the centre. The rug sits on wood flooring; these were originally stained in a black colour which was far too dark to compliment the clients’ new schemes. The whole apartment was sanded and resealed in a natural oak finish. Next to the sofa, a tall free-standing lamp from Heathfield with a stunning oriental inspired shaped glass globe with hanging tassel detailing.

Kitchen

The existing kitchen area was upgraded by covering the original walnut front panels of the breakfast bar with fretwork detailing – behind this design we added antique mirror to reflect the light. The oriental inspired shape of the fretwork compliments the client’s Netsuke figures in the cabinet. We sourced 3 feature pendant lights in an alabaster finish to sit above. The bar stools supplied by Robert Langford have a contrasting upholstered velvet back and fabric seat.

Master bedroom

This double bedroom with ensuite was completely transformed into a plush, elegant, calming area. The drab walls were replaced with hand painted Fromental silk wallpaper with bamboo foliage and birds.

We sourced an upholstered headboard with a dark wood contrast trim; this is complimented by the addition of a lacquer bedside table from Chelsea Textiles and hand-blown glass lamp with a natural linen shade.

Tom Faulkner supplied a feature marble topped console, this sits on the adjacent wall to the bedroom door. This is sat underneath a Porta Romana textured bronze mirror and a pair of complimentary antique gilt wall lights either side. In the large window of the bedroom, we added in a soft toned painted dressing table with velvet stool from Andrew Martin. This was styled with a large mother of pearl dressing table mirror.

New full-length textured cream curtains were made with a green decorative trim from Scalamandre.

Entrance Hall

This area was totally unprepossessing and lacked character. Applying new panelling created a sense of arrival and enabled us to define the long corridor leading to the guest bedroom. We were able to add in fun toucan wall lights from Porta Romana and a large antique mirror in the centre, opening up the space allowing the corridor to feel larger. The opposite wall has blue Chinese vases framed in antique silver from the Trowbridge Gallery. We also added in a decorative plaster cornice and new bronze ironmongery on all doors as well as new coordinating light switches and sockets.

Guest Bedroom

This large double bedroom at the rear of the apartment was designed as a relaxing space for their guests and daughter to enjoy. The blue palette carried through from the hallway was successfully curated by choosing a Phillip Jeffries blue Japanese mountain landscape wallpaper. The blend of blue tones is carried through to the upholstered headboard and enhanced by the high gloss dark blue Robert Langford bedside cabinets and matching chest of drawers. The bedside lamps were supplied by the client. To finish off the design we added decorative scatter cushions; two with a glass beaded trim and a beautiful embroidered fabric and the other a blue velvet with fluffy trim edge detail.

In the window we wanted to have an area where the clients’ guests could use their lap tops, read a book and relax so we sourced a comfortable swivel armchair covered in a soft pale blue fabric with light contrasting trim. We added in an original blue Dior cushion and hung an oval plaster mussel shell mirror and floor lamp.
